Silicone Gel Implants
Safe and Effective Breast Enlargment
On November 17, 2006, the FDA lifted its ban on silicone gel breast implants, providing all women over age 22 the option of using silicone gel breast implants for breast enlargement surgery.
With the approval of silicone gel implants, Dr. Sloan at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, LLC in Little Rock, Arkansas, can provide all his patients with every available breast implant option; making sure they receive the results they have been searching for. Dr. Sloan has been an FDA Investigator for both the Inamed and Mentor Silicone Gel Filled Breast Implant studies since they began in 1996.
The FDA originally banned silicone gel breast implants because they believed there was a connection between the silicone gel breast implants and certain Connective Tissue Disorders (CTDs). However, after years of testing and rigorous studies, the FDA has determined that silicone gel breast implants are not only very effective, but also safe for use, in breast enlargement surgery.
Once silicone gel breast implants were banned, the only type of implants widely available to women were saline breast implants. While all breast implants are created with an outer, silicone shell, the difference between silicone gel breast implants and saline breast implants is the material that is used to fill the silicone shell.
Silicone gel breast implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel, while saline implants use a salt-water solution. By using cohesive silicone gel, if the silicone gel breast implant were to rupture, the gel would hold its shape preventing any significant leaking into the body, and usually preserving the breast size and shape. If saline implants were to rupture, the body absorbs the salt-water solution within them, and the breast goes flat.
There are many advantages of using silicone gel breast implants for your breast augmentation. One of these advantages is that many believe that the look and feel of silicone gel breast implants is more natural than saline breast implants. Also, since the gel used in silicone gel breast implants is thicker than saline, it is less prone to movement, and thus, less likely to result in visible rippling on the breasts.
The most important aspect of the FDA’s approval of silicone gel breast implants is that women are now able to have all breast implant options available to them. By being able to choose the exact type of breast implant you want, you may be much more satisfied with your breast augmentation results.
