Buccal Fat Removal

Buccal fat is a pad of fatty tissue present in an individual’s cheeks, with the size and shape typically varying from one person to another. For those who struggle with the appearance of fuller cheeks, buccal fat removal may be an ideal method of achieving a slimmer and more contoured face. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, our team is led by board-certified plastic surgeon Gene Sloan, MD. With facial procedures such as buccal fat removal, Dr. Sloan can develop a customized treatment plan designed to utilize advanced techniques capable of meeting each patient’s personal needs and cosmetic goals.

What Is Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal is a surgical procedure designed to remove fat between the cheeks and jawbones. Also referred to as cheek reduction surgery, the removal of buccal fat can help highlight a patient’s jawbone structure for a more “chiseled” and defined look. The removed fat does not grow back and the procedure does not leave visible scars on a patient’s face as the incisions are made inside the mouth.

Am I a Candidate for Buccal Fat Removal?

Ideal candidates for buccal fat removal are typically those who feel they have excessive fullness in their cheeks and wish to reduce that fuller appearance. Patients looking to pursue buccal fat removal should be at a healthy, stable weight, not smoke, and have realistic expectations for procedure results.

Individuals who may not be a good candidate are those with a naturally narrow face or have sagging facial skin due to aging. Buccal fat naturally diminishes as patients get older and the procedure is not meant to remove excess skin.

Buccal fat removal can be performed as a standalone procedure, or it can be performed alongside other facial plastic surgery procedures for a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Dr. Sloan can meet with individual patients for an initial consultation to discuss their goals and determine whether buccal fat removal is a suitable option for their needs.

What Does Buccal Fat Removal Involve?

The buccal fat removal process is fairly straightforward and simple. The procedure often begins with anesthetic administered to numb the cheeks. A small incision will be made on the inside of the mouth so the fat pads can be gently and safely removed. Once the appropriate amount has been extracted, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures that do not need to be removed.

How Much Does Buccal Fat Removal Cost?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that the average cost of buccal fat removal is $2,883*; however, that denotes a general estimate and the total price at our practice will vary among patients. Associated cost factors not included in the ASPS estimate are:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Imagery and medical tests
  • Prescribed medications

Treatment plans are tailored to a patient’s individual needs and goals, including the overall cost. Once the treatment plan has been developed, patients will receive their customized quote. Additionally, we offer financing options that can help qualified patients budget for procedures more effectively and make surgeries such as buccal fat removal more accessible.
