Rhinoplasty

Nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty, can help improve the size, shape, and general appearance of your nose. This can help enhance the balance between your nose and other facial features. In addition to cosmetic improvements, rhinoplasty is capable of correcting structural concerns and breathing difficulties.

At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Gene Sloan, MD regularly performs rhinoplasty to help his patients achieve their desired appearance and improve their quality of life. He understands that nose surgery can be driven by cosmetic or medical purposes, and tailors the procedure to meet each individual’s goals and needs with natural and satisfying results.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty offers several aesthetic and functional benefits, including:

  • Correcting structural issues, such as a deviated septum, to improve breathing and enhance nasal airflow.
  • Altering the nose’s shape, size, or angle to better complement other facial features.
  • Improving one’s self-esteem by addressing cosmetic nasal concerns.
  • Fixing congenital abnormalities and helping restore a nose’s normal function and appearance.
  • Reconstructing the nose following trauma or injury.
  • Offering long-lasting results.

Who Is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty or nose reshaping are typically those who seek to improve the appearance of their nose and/or correct breathing issues, potentially caused by structural abnormalities, congenital defects, or deformities from an injury. They should have realistic expectations about surgery results, aiming for improvement rather than perfection. Additionally, individuals who are dissatisfied with the outcomes of previous nasal surgeries may seek revision rhinoplasty. It is crucial that candidates are non-smokers, as smoking can significantly impair the healing process. A consultation with Dr. Sloan can help determine rhinoplasty candidacy.

How Is the Nose Surgery Procedure Performed?

Nose surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under a general anesthetic, typically lasting between one and four hours. This procedure may involve either an open or closed approach. In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the tissue between the nostrils, also known as the columella, allowing for greater visibility and access. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are hidden inside the nostrils. Through these incisions, Dr. Sloan can reshape the underlying bone and cartilage to achieve the desired contour. Excess bone or cartilage may be removed, or tissue may be added, depending on a patient’s needs. The skin can then be redraped over the new framework and the incisions are closed. The nose will often be dressed with tape and a small splint over the bridge, but is almost never packed.

How Is Recovery After Rhinoplasty?

We recommend having a friend or family member help take care of you the first 24 hours after your surgery. The recovery process usually includes mild swelling and bruising that gradually subsides. A nasal splint is often needed for five to six days. We advise patients to take at least a week off from work and driving, and rest with their head elevated. Your nose will need to remain protected for at least six weeks to help facilitate successful healing.

“Thank you so much. I just want you guys to know how much I appreciate you all. You made me feel at ease and confident, and everything went extremely well. Thanks for everything.”
