Silicone Gel vs. Saline Filled Implants

There are many decisions to make in your breast implant journey and one decision that you’ll need to weigh is the type of implant. Saline and Silicone implants each have their pros and cons. What is right for one woman may not be right for another. Discussing these options with your plastic surgeon is a great way to begin. You can feel the implants and view before and after photos of each to get an idea of which seems like the best fit for you.

Now, let’s take a look at what each has to offer:

Saline: A saline breast implant’s outer shell is made out of a rubber material called silicone elastomer which, while empty, is placed in under your lower breast crease and implanted under your chest tissue, but can also be implanted under you muscle, and then is filled with a saltwater solution known as saline. Since this kind of implant is filled by your Plastic Surgeon during the procedure, it can be adjusted to ensure a good fit. However, saline implants are generally acknowledged to be more prone to visible rippling and less natural in appearance.

Silicone: A silicone gel implant, unlike a saline implant, comes pre-filled. Silicone implants have undergone several changes in the past decade and the implant’s shell is now covered by three layers to better ensure that there is no gel leakage. These added layers make it more firm that its predecessors, but it still retains a soft and natural feel. Silicone implants can be placed in from the armpit, nipple, lower breast crease or umbilicus.
